Carlos Federico Gaitán Hairabedian is a distinguished international criminal law attorney with a specialization in human rights and is currently a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) candidate in International Law at СÀ¶ÊÓƵ’s Washington College of Law, based in Washington, D.C. Ìý
Since his early twenties, Federico has developed a notable career defined by his steadfast dedication to justice and human rights advocacy. He holds a JD from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and a specialization in criminal law from Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT). Federico also earned an LL.M. in International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law from Washington College of Law (СÀ¶ÊÓƵ-WCL). He has participated in numerous seminars and conferences on genocide and human rights across Latin America, the United States, Canada, and Armenia and wrote numerous papers regarding Human Rights, Genocide studies and international criminal law.Ìý
Federico has played a leading role in the prosecution of human rights violations during Argentina’s last military dictatorship. From 2014 to 2017, he served as the lead private prosecutor in the ESMA III Trial Death Flights Section on behalf of the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) among other Human Rights NGO’s, a landmark case involving more than 50 accused and over 800 victims.Ìý
As President of the Argentine-Armenian NGO Luisa Hairabedian Foundation, Federico led the organization’s efforts culminating in the historic 2011 ruling by an Argentine federal court that recognized the Armenian Genocide under Argentine law, international human rights law, and the UN Genocide Convention (Truth Trial of the Armenian Genocide). Under his leadership, the Foundation continues to focus on various cultural and educational programs, including a longstanding initiative that promotes young scholars from Latin American to the Genocide and Human Rights University Program at the University of Toronto (GHRUP), organized by the International Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies.ÌýFederico also serves on the Executive Board of the Zoryan Institute and is a Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University, New Jersey. In addition, he leads his own law firm, Gaitán Hairabedian Abogados, and teaches Human Rights and Constitutional Law at the University of Buenos Aires Law School.Ìý
