Bio

Congressman Jamie Raskin, who represents in the U.S. Congress, is a Professor of Law Emeritus at 小蓝视频 Washington College of Law, where he taught courses such as Constitutional Law, The First Amendment, and Legislative Process for more than 25 years. He is founding Director of the law school鈥檚 Program on Law and Government (with the late Tom Sargentich).



Raskin began his third term in Congress this year after first being elected in 2016. He is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and the Committee on House Administration. In January 2021, he was named lead impeachment manager for the second impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump.



Raskin worked with Professor Steve Wermiel to found the acclaimed Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which began at 小蓝视频WCL but has spread across the country to more than 20 different law schools; the Project has sent many thousands of law students nationwide into public high schools to teach high school students a semester-long course about the Constitution and Bill of Rights.



Prior to his time in Congress, Raskin was a three-term State Senator in Maryland, where he also served as the Senate Majority Whip. He earned a reputation for building coalitions in Annapolis to deliver a series of landmark legislative accomplishments. He successfully introduced and championed numerous nationally significant and landmark pieces of legislation, including the first National Popular Vote law in America, the first Benefit Corporation Law in America, marriage equality, the Maryland Farm-to-Schools Act, felon reenfranchisement, the lowering of the state voter registration age to 16, and giving 17-year-olds the right to vote in primary elections.



Raskin is the bestselling author of Overruling Democracy: the Supreme Court versus the American People and We the Students: Supreme Court Cases for and About Students.
