PIJIP’s Senior Research Analyst Andrés Izquierdo, in collaboration with Beatriz Busaniche and Luca Shiru, conducted a training session on the right to research, text and data mining, and artificial intelligence at the Copyright Office of Panama. Attendees included the Copyright Director and staff, Minister of Culture, Vice-Minister of Culture, and staff. Presentations ran longer than anticipated due to the audience's high engagement level, which consistently numbered around 30 participants. During the session, they discussed the current work developed at WIPO on artificial intelligence and TDM and the current status of global R2R provisions, with special emphasis on Brazil, Argentina, and Panama. They conducted an exercise to review their applicable R2R exception and then drafted a R2R/TDM exception. One important outcome was the suggestion to expand the existing research exception to include communication, indicating a growing openness to broaden legal provisions for research collaborations.
