Andr茅s Izquierdo, Senior Research Analyst at PIJIP participated in the Eighth Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property (IP) and Frontier Technologies, centering on the crucial role of training data in shaping Generative AI capabilities and its intersection with copyright law. Notably, the discussions highlighted the deficiency of copyright exceptions in Latin American nations to support text and data mining research. Acknowledgment was given to the work of PIJIP, 小蓝视频, and the NGO Karisma in Colombia, advocating for the Right to Research. It was also observed that Latin American National Artificial Intelligence strategies inadequately address copyright concerns, emphasizing the need for better alignment between these domains. Additionally, the region suffers from a lack of locally conducted research studies, calling for broader exceptions for digital use and legislative harmonization across Latin American countries to nurture research, innovation, and responsible AI advancement.
