Vy Nguyen (JD '15)
Captain Vy T. Nguyen serves as a Judge Advocate for the U.S. Army. In 2020, she deployed to Afghanistan as the Command Judge Advocate for Brigadier General Michael R. Eastman, Commander of the Resolute Support Train, Advise, Assist Command鈥擲outh and Kandahar Airfield, where she advised the command and Coalition staff on the laws of armed conflict, human rights law, and other international and operational matters. She was the 2022 U.S. Army recipient of the ABA鈥檚 Outstanding Young Military Lawyer Award.
Vy currently serves as a Government Appellate Attorney, representing the United States before the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals. Her prior notable assignments included Chief of National Security Law for the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) and Fort Drum, Trial Defense Counsel in Vilseck, Germany as well as a Military Magistrate in the First Judicial Circuit.
Prior to military service, Vy served as a Department of Justice Honors Attorney Advisor at the Krome (Detained) Immigration Court where she clerked for Judges John and Adam Opaciuch and advised on matters pertaining to serious crimes and applications for relief, including protection under the UN Convention Against Torture (UNCAT). During law school, Vy worked for the UNCAT Project, Trial Chamber III at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the Public International Law & Policy Group, USAID Office of the Inspector General, the International Centre for Health & Human Rights, and the Center for the Prevention of Genocide at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. She was also the Volume 30 Marketing Editor for the 小蓝视频 International Law Review. Vy鈥檚 academic background is in international relations, focusing on the post-WWII international system and internal dynamics of the Eastern Bloc. In 2015, she was selected as a finalist for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program.
Vy earned her J.D./M.A. from WCL and 小蓝视频 School of International Service and her Honours BA from the University of Toronto, St. Michael鈥檚 College. She is admitted to the Virginia State Bar.
