Suat Cubukcu, Ph.D., is a Professorial Lecturer in Justice, Law, and Criminology Department at СÀ¶ÊÓƵ, specializing in the area of terrorism and methodological issues in terrorism research. Dr. Cubukcu also serves as a Senior Data Analyst at a consultancy firm for the Global Terrorism Trends and Analysis Center for the Bureau of Counterterrorism of the US Department of State, where he works on the methodological framework and statistical analysis of global terrorism data collection. He previously worked as a quantitative research consultant at the Center for Teaching and Learning Center (CTRL) at СÀ¶ÊÓƵ, where he provided consultation to faculty and students on quantitative research. Before joining the academia, Dr. Cubukcu served for the United Nations and in its peacekeeping operations.
Dr. Cubukcu investigated the quality of the open source (OS) accounts on terrorism by examining more than 10,000 official records from Turkey and comparing with open-source accounts. He also collected his own open-source data collection on gang homicide incidents in the U.S. and compared with FBI official accounts. Dr. Cubukcu extensively studied separatist and jihadist terrorist organizations, including the PKK and al-Shabaab, and evaluated Turkish and Kenyan governments’ counter-terrorism policies. His studies have been published in a number of scientific journals, including Homicide Studies, Journal of Policing, Intelligence, and Counter-Terrorism, and Small Wars Journal. Dr. Cubukcu has recently received a grant from the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme to work on regional dynamics and policy implications of post-ISIS era.
