NIWAP Dean鈥檚 Fellows Projects
Dean鈥檚 Fellows working at NIWAP work on a range of projects examples include:
- Assisting NIWAP legal staff in responding to technical assistance requests from state, local and federal government agencies (e.g., police, prosecutors, judges) and from advocates and attorneys across the country.
- Developing training tools and materials for state court judges providing legally correct information on immigration laws, public benefits and family laws to help courts address immigration law allegations and issues that arise in family court cases (e.g., domestic violence, child abuse, child support, custody, and child welfare proceedings)
- Research and writing for publications that train state court judges on best practices that help human trafficking victims judges encounter in court, U visa certification by judges and issuing findings for children applying for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status.
- Collecting stories from law enforcement, prosecutors, and judges illustrating the benefits to the justice system and for access to justice efforts of U and T visa certification programs.
Eligibility and Requirements
JD and LL.M students are eligible for these positions. Interested students with a background in women鈥檚 or victim鈥檚 rights, immigration and/or family law are especially encouraged to apply as are students with foreign language proficiency. Dean鈥檚 Fellowships at the NIWAP are paid, with a time commitment of 15-20 hours a week during the school year and 20-35 hours per week during the summer. Dean鈥檚 Fellowships are also available for 10 hours a week for first-year JD students.
